What is Coaching?

Coaching is a new profession that has steadily gained prominence in the past two decades. For some of you, this will be your first introduction to coaching. Coaching is not therapy, counseling, or advice. It is a skill-based approach to the whole person across the lifespan. The coaching process helps you find your best self, get what you want out of life, and live with more passion, curiosity and purpose.

Coaching utilizes a special kind of psychology. It does not use the old psychology models that examined how people are broken and need fixing. Coaching utilizes generative psychology. This approach sees people as basically healthy, motivated to use their knowledge and skills, and driven to actualize their potential. This psychology is about tapping into and generating new potential, resources and strengths.

Meta-Coaching

Meta-coaching is a methodology where what the coach does occurs at a level higher to the action. Coaching is about an expertise at a higher level than the performance, it is at the level of the structure and process. The coach does not have to have knowledge about the content. Rather, the coach is working with meanings "meta" to the content. The term "meta" refers to something "above" and "beyond" another thing, something at a "higher" level so that it is "about" it or in reference to it.

The coaching conversation assists in setting compelling outcomes, can fiercely expose interferences to success, actualize potentials or remap a new game plan to further one’s development.

It's an exchange and exploration that gets to the heart of the matter, mirrors current reality in a non-judgmental way, and that thereby unleashes potentials which makes transformation possible.
